Milton's Monday Moment: Tips for Leaving Your Home

Hey there Red Door family! This week on Milton, we’re going to discuss the emotional aspect of buying and selling real estate. For most, a home is the biggest and most important purchase they will make throughout their lives, and it is inevitable to develop emotional attachments to houses that you either want to live in or have lived in and hold many dear memories made in those walls. A house that has been made into your home can act as an emotional anchor- for good or bad- and it can be difficult to leave, especially if you have lived in the home for a significant period of time.

If you are deciding whether you want to sell your home and move or not, it can be helpful to write a pros and cons list. If the reason you want to move is to be closer to family and friends, then try to remember that “home is where the heart is” and that you will make more memories in your future home with your loved ones. If you want to move for a financial reason, whether it’s to downsize as empty nesters or move into a better neighborhood because you earn more money now, try to think about the benefits you’ll see with a smaller house payment or more equity in your home that sits in a more competitive market.

Most people (myself included) HATE moving. When I was younger, we moved three times within a period of two years. Granted, we stayed in the same neighborhood (and one move was directly next door), the process is never fun. Not only do you have to go through everything that you own and try to fit it all into flimsy cardboard boxes, but you then have to UNPACK it all when you get to your destination. Packing everything you own is not only physically exhausting, but can also be mentally draining too. Good and bad memories can be drug up, and you may have to make decisions about what to keep and what to get rid of or donate. While it can be therapeutic to declutter, it can also be stressful. Just remember that it’ll all be worth it in the end!

Some tips for detaching yourself emotionally from leaving your home:

  1. Think about WHY you decided to move and hold your why close as a reminder that the best is yet to come.
  2. Pack personal items up as soon as you make the decision- whether it’s family photos on the wall or the things that you love most about your home like the plants hanging in the kitchen or the décor that’s significance is sentimental, and think about where you’ll put these items in your new home.
  3. Think about your new home! There’s a reason why you decided to buy it and leave where you are now, so focus on the benefits and positive aspects of moving. Are you shortening your daily commute? Will you have easier access to places you like to spend your free time? Are the finishes and layout more your style of choice and fitting to your lifestyle? Think about future projects you have planned for your new space!
  4. Remember that this is part of your journey. Life is constantly moving forward, and change can be good for you. Don’t fight what’s meant to be!
